The Value of Failed Experiments in Cybersecurity

The “Learning from Authoritative Security Experiment Results (LASER)” workshop series was established in 2012 with the purpose of publishing results for “properly conducted experimental (cyber) security research, including both successful as well as unsuccessful experiments.” Here, 2016 program chair Sean Peisert, a staff scientist at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, associate adjunct professor of computer science at the University of California, Davis, and chief scientist for cybersecurity for the Corporation for Education Network Initiatives in California, discusses the importance of failed experiments and evidence-based approaches in cybersecurity.
